Toy Dog Breeds

Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is a small breed of dog having a dense, curly coat with a characteristic fine wave. They make excellent companion dogs of a similar size and temperament to the Miniature Poodle. The Bichon, due to its ancestry as a sailors dog, often enjoys water and retrieving.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a very popular family dog due to its open, friendly nature towards people and animals.  It has a silky, smooth coat and feathering on the tail and legs. The breed was created from the King Charles Spaniel in the 20th century to resemble dogs in antique portraits.

Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog and is named for a Mexican state where they were kept by the Aztecs. They are excellent small dogs full of personality but their size makes them unsuitable for younger children. Chihuahuas come in a wide variety of sizes, head shapes, colours, and coat lengths.

Chinese Crested Dog

The Chinese Crested Dog comes in two varieties, with and without complete hair coats, which are born in the same litter: the Powder Puff and the Hairless. The skin of the hairless variety can require special care to prevent dryness or sunburn, and a coat would be advisable in winter.

The Griffon Bruxellois or Brussels Griffon is a breed of toy dog that has become more popular in recent years. The picture shown is not a great example (their bite should be better) but is valuable in showing the coat how it usually is, rather than groomed for showing.

Havanese

The Havanese, a breed of Bichon type, is the national dog of Cuba. The breed has been growing rapidly in popularity as a good alternative toy breed to the Bichon or Maltese. In the picture is how we usually see them, rather than the high-maintenance show clip.

Japanese Chin

The Japanese Chin has always been an important companion breed to Japanese nobility. They are a loyal and affectionate dog with a long, silky coat. While they can be reserved in different situations, early socialisation of puppies leads to a dog that is more outgoing and social.

Löwchen

The Löwchen’s or Little Lion Dog’s long and wavy coat is presented in a lion cut for showing. This means that the haunches, back legs, front legs and part of the tail are shaved, and the rest of the coat is left natural to give the dog the appearance of a male lion. Of course, most just look like the photograph for practical reasons.

Miniature Pinscher

The Miniature Pinscher is a tiny and finely built relative of the larger German Pinscher. Pinschers and Dobermans share a characteristic black and tan coat pattern. Min Pins are active and social dogs, and can be fearless despite their size if socialised early and well.

Maltese

The Maltese descends from dogs originating in the Central Mediterranean Area, especially the island nation of Malta. They are a classic companion dog at their best when able to be around a favourite person. Their long coat does not shed but requires frequent clipping and is rarely kept at the show standard length for practical reasons.

Papillon

The Papillon, also called the Continental Toy Spaniel, is a breed of dog of the Spaniel type. One of the oldest of the toy spaniels, it derives its name from its characteristic butterfly-like look of the long and fringed hair on the ears, the French word for butterfly being papillon.

Pekingese

The Pekingese was favoured by royalty of the Chinese Imperial court as both a lap dog and companion dog, and its name refers to the city of Peking (Beijing). Like all brachycephalic breeds, they are prone to heat stress and eye and upper airway problems. Many Pekes we see are kept with a short coat for practical reasons.

Tibetan Spaniel

The Tibetan Spaniel is a breed of assertive, small, intelligent dogs originating over 2,500 years ago in the Himalayan mountains of Tibet. They share ancestry with the Pekingese, Japanese Chin, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Tibetan Terrier and Pug. The breed is not a true spaniel but instead is a toy breed with a high affinity for humans.

The Yorkshire Terrier is a tiny breed developed during the 19th century in Yorkshire, England, to catch rats in clothing mills. Like the larger Silky Terrier, their long soft coat requires regular brushing. They are full of energy and curiosity but are possibly more timid and in need of human contact than other terriers.

The Airedale Terrier is the largest of the terriers and originated in the valley of the River Aire, in Yorkshire. It has a medium length wiry coat which many owners happily manage without hand-stripping. Airedales share the same determination and vigour as their smaller terrier cousins.

The American Staffordshire Terrier or Amstaff is a medium-sized, short-coated breed very popular in Australia. They are larger and more powerful than the English Staffy but are just as friendly with people. Amstaffs get unfairly labelled as pit bulls but the only problem we see is fighting if two or more are kept together.

Australian Silky Terrier

The Australian Silky Terrier is a smaller, more affectionate terrier with a longer, finer coat than the Australian Terrier. The breed was popularised after WWII when dogs were taken back to the US by returning servicemen. They are an active and alert dog and may do better in apartments than other terriers if given daily exercise.

The Australian Terrier is a small breed of dog of the terrier dog type. The breed was developed in Australia, although the ancestral types of dogs from which the breed descends were from Great Britain.

Bull Terrier

The Bull Terrier’s most recognisable feature is its head, described as ‘egg-shaped’ when viewed from the front; the top of the skull is almost flat. Despite their fearsome appearance, they are usually friendly, happy-go-lucky dogs. There is also a miniature version of this breed which is officially known as the Miniature Bull Terrier.

The Cairn Terrier is one of the oldest of the terrier breeds, originating in the Scottish Highlands. Cairns are plucky, active dogs much like their most famous mascot, Toto from The Wizard Of Oz. Despite what you hear, their wiry coat can happily be left unstripped in its natural scruffy state.

The Smooth Fox Terrier, though not a common breed today, was one of the most popular dog breeds in Australia only two generations ago. It is thought to be the ancestor of many other breeds and is easily recognised by its long, broad nose. Foxies seem a quieter and more thoughtful terrier than most.

The Irish Terrier is generally seen with its distinctive red, wiry coat. It is a taller terrier and like all this group requires physical and mental stimulation on a daily basis for good health. If managed well, Irish Terriers make excellent, active and entertaining pets still capable of being settled at home.

Scottish Terrier

The Scottish Terrier, popularly called the Scottie, is an independent and rugged breed with a wiry outer coat and a soft dense undercoat. They have a characteristic long muzzle and a long undercoat. Like most terriers, they are a feisty and fearless dog with a loveable personality.

The Wire Fox Terrier is an enthusiastic and energetic breed with a loveably scruffy coat (why on earth do people hand-strip it?). Although it bears a resemblance to the Smooth Fox Terrier, the two breeds are believed to have developed separately. Snowy (Milou) from the Tintin adventures is probably the most famous Wire Fox Terrier.

The Akita Inu originates from the mountainous northern regions of Japan. In Australia, there are two breeds recognised: the Akita, which derives from dogs brought back to the USA after World War 2, and the Akita (Japanese). Both dogs have a thick coat, large size, regal bearing and strong personality. Japanese Akitas are known for their playful, friendly nature.

Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute was originally bred for hauling heavy freight, and later as a sled dog in the Arctic. Like other Northern breeds such as the smaller Siberian Husky, it has a very thick double coat which can be clipped off for summer. Malamutes are very affectionate with people but may not be best around cats or rabbits.

Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is an ancient dog breed originally from northern China, where it is referred to as Songshi Quan, which means “puffy-lion dog”. The breed is known for a very dense double coat, straight hind legs and its characteristic blue tongue.

Finnish Lapphund

The Finnish Lapphund is a hardy, easy going, medium-size breed of the Spitz family. Traditionally it has been used for herding reindeer, and therefore its coat provides extremely good cold protection. While still rare, we are starting to see more and more of this charming breed in Adelaide.

The Finnish Spitz was originally bred to hunt all types of game from squirrels and other rodents to bears. It would alert the hunter by barking at its preys location- you have been warned! That being said, the dogs we see are happy, active and plucky without major problems.

The Keeshond (case-ond in Australia) is a medium-sized dog carrying a plush two-layer coat of silver and black fur with a ruff and a curled tail. Despite the myth, shaving their dense coat for summer will not prevent full regrowth and will improve comfort considerably. Keeshonds are also known as the Dutch Barge Dog and are a member of the Spitz family.

Samoyed

It takes its name from the Samoyedic peoples of Siberia, who used them to pull sleds. Today the Samoyed is a friendly dog who guards well but needs protection against summer heat.

The Siberian Husky is originally a hunting and sled dog from north-eastern Siberia.  Like the larger Malamute, it has a thickly furred double coat, erect triangular ears, and distinctive markings. In Australian summers they are best either be kept inside or clipped short for comfort.

Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog, called in German the Berner Sennenhund, is a large-sized breed of dog, one of the four breeds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps. Bernese, though outdoor dogs at heart, do well in the house as long as they get plenty of walking exercise.

The Bouvier des Flandres is a powerfully built, compact, rough-coated dog breed originating in Flanders. They were originally used for general farm work including cattle droving, sheep herding, and cart pulling, and nowadays as guard dogs and police dogs, as well as being kept as pets. A male trained as a trench dog in the First World War, is considered to be the founder of the early Bouvier des Flandres breed.

The Standard Poodle is a large and intelligent dog breed used in many dog sports and activities, including agility, obedience, performing and assistance.
