Hi Roslyn. Personally I would advise you to have the surgery if there’s no other evidence of tumour, even without further investigation. It has a small chance of cure, but it should delay the time of euthanasia, even if the tumour is not completely removed. Its size means that they should be able to be done without causing excessive damage.

My 11 year old Border Collie/Kelpie went to the vet to have some grass seeds removed and check anal glands. She has a 1cm tumor , anal gland andenocarcinoma. I do not want to put her through xray and ultrasound to check lymph nodes etc. My thoughts are to just operate and remove the anal glands. Do you think this is of any benefit to Molly or am I putting her through a painful procedure for no result? Also what is the approximate cost to do so.

Hi Martha. I have to agree with your vet. My experience (plus the evidence) points to the benefit of removing the nodes. The primary anal tumour often in fact seems to cause less problems.

Hello, my dog had hypercalcemia which led to diagnosis of a 4cm anal sac adenocarcinoma and 3 lumbar node tumors. The surgeon said the lumbar nodes would be removed if possible, and if not, they would not remove the anal sac tumor either. I asked if they could just remove the anal sac, in that case, to help the hypercalcemia and to give her more time, but the answer was no, there would be no point. Now I wonder if that is the correct approach? Could removing the anal sac tumor still help, exend her life and it's quality, even if it has spread to the lumbar nodes? Thank you very much.
