If you find the litter SO dusty that you wear a mask when handling it could it be too dusty for your pets?
I ask this because I am assessing using Aldi bentonite clay litter and from recent visit to the vet for one cat and the amount of very fine dust around the litter box has me asking questions and researching. I may have to go over to paper pellet litter tray to reduce health risk to our pets.

In reply to <a href="https://www.walkervillevet.com.au/blog/best-cat-litter/#comment-149356">Andrew</a>.

This is all I use and have used for years now and my cats like it, however it seems to have changed recently. Granule size used to be reasonably consistent and the litter was a whitish-grey colour. The last 4-5 bags have been a red or red-orange colour, lots of foreign items (sticks and hard rocks that don’t appear to be clay etc) and granule size varies wildly in each bag. Also disturbingly I recently found a small, sharp piece of metal in the litter while I was scooping. There is no way it came from anywhere other than the bag and looks to be a washer or similar that has been sheared along one side. Very worrying as it could easily have caused a nasty injury to one of my cats.

Im looking to switch to something else which let me here. It’s a shame as Aldi had a brilliant product at an even better price point but now it’s rubbish.

I am reviewing feedback about cat litter for a friend who will be taking in 2 cats soon. I wanted to see what others think about my choice and if there are others I would now also consider trying.
I have read elsewhere about tofu litters so am tempted.
But Im really surprised that my personal standout cat litter has so far not even been mentioned in any reviews including this one. It is the Aldi clumping cat litter - I believe it is bentonite. I tried many different clumping litters as well as several wood, silica and paper litters. The Aldi one was streets ahead of every other one I tried, including Breeders Choice. It is a very nice consistency the cats seem to like, it has superior clumping - not just sticky but actual discrete lumps, and the dust and tracking are not that bad - and I use the grey litter trapper pad (avail from Kmart and others) which also helps. It is cheap, performs admirably and lasts well - wins on virtually every facet.

I use this tofu litter in a top layer over the crystals. Great with the sieve tray as clumps on surface but also fine stuff falls through.

I must give another thumbs up to Catlux, purely for the odour side of things. It has the best smell by far of many different types of litter I've tried for my 7 cats, spread over usually 4/5 trays ( yes that is a lot of kitty litter), cleaned at least twice a day.
Catlux doesn't clump as well as clay based litters but the smell factor wins out. I shake excess litter off and flush poos but even though it says it's flushable, I don't flush the urine clumps - too much material for the sewerage system in my opinion.
Yes it is a bit dusty but I've gotten into the habit of wearing a mask when cleaning it and I have transitioned to top entry litter trays which minimises tracking as the litter tray lids are designed to trap litter off cats' feet as they jump out.

Cat's Best (also known as Öko Plus) Cat Litter, which is made of wood fibres, is also a good cat litter. It is best used when you are not able to replace the litter every other day, as it is expensive, but it is very effective at locking waste up.
