Hi Dr Andrew
Our sheltie has an unerupted adult canine tooth (or lance tooth) which Google tells me is considered a genetic anomaly appearing in shelties. The lance tooth does not appear to be causing any misalignment of other teeth or causing pain or difficulties. Is it generally best practice to extract the unerupted tooth? Or start with an x-ray to see if there's any issues under the gum. Thank you.

Hi Angela. That’s such a complex decision, and involves balancing many factors including expected lifespan, current quality of life, prognosis after treatment of the other conditions. Therefore, it’s only a discussion you can have with your vet in person. Additionally, as the willingness of vets to anaesthetise older dogs varies greatly, you could ask another vet for a second opinion.
