Hi, i took myndog for a run to the field today, and we have come home and she has a cut between her dew claw and leg, it bleed for a while but has stopped now, her claw is slightly sticking out. I've put a sock on her and have some coconut oil. She is upset if I touch it. Is there anything else I can do? Will it heal on its own?

Hi Tara. I’m sorry, this post is not to give options for home treatment of broken dew claws. If there’s any further concern, please see a vet.

Hello Doctor,

I ended up having my labradoodle’s front dew claw removed last week and it turned out ti be a sarcoma. I’m sorry that I let it go for a year. They didn’t know if was cancerous at the time of removal, but apparently the margins are clean, though very small at 2mm. They only took two metatarsals, not three. It’s recommended we see an oncologist. Hi hope his odds for reoccurrence are low.

Hi Justin. As you probably already know, double hind dew claws are considered normal for the Great Pyrenees or Pyrenean Mountain Dog, although in my personal opinion they cause too many problems with becoming ingrown. I can assure you that the chance of anything bad happening from removing them is extremely low. I personally have no time for some of the beliefs around why the breed has the dew claws and I don’t think they are necessary at all. As for the cost, people don’t seek alternative prices very often due to feelings of loyalty, but you might find your vet is just so busy right now that they don’t mind.

Our Great Pyrenees/St Bernard mix, Gretchen, is 17 months old and has double dew claws on her hind legs. Our vet just told us the cost to remove them is between $3,000-and $4,000. We always assumed when we got her fixed (The advice was to wait until she was older) we would be able to have them removed along with the stomach procedure to prevent bloat.

I'm having so much trouble finding trustworthy information and the internet seems to be designed to lead you to the answer you want. My first few searches told me it wasn't needed and the procedure could cause arthritis but I can't just take the word of some random website.

Can anyone give me advice on finding trustworthy information. My vet is a nice guy and loves animals but he also has an incentive to make $. We live in one of California's more wealthy counties, but we are not wealthy and $4K is not something we can easily come up with
