Hi dear All,

Our 1 1/2 year old spayed Weimaraner developed a light swelling on top of the snout with circular tiny sheds ( almost not visible) which over night increased tremendously in size. The next morning a yellow bursting sore liquid build a crust on top making it a 4cm big sore. The vet prescribed antibiotics and something against the swelling. The thick wound started bleeding strongly the next morning and a crust started building over the now open wound. Meanwhile much smaller circular bumps started appearing one after another around the snout and one on top of her ear (6 in total). At the same time she got a rash inside both ears which has meanwhile calmed down. The vet asked us to come in again for additional tests and increased her antibiotic intake. The wound has become a bit dryer but otherwise recovery seens tremendously slow. Now we’re waiting on results and are feeling a bit lost. After the results the vet suggested a biopsy as a next step in case we haven’t found a cause for all of this by then. This all has happened within a week. I would share images but there doesn’t seem to be a function here. Please let me know your thoughts.

I am so thankful we came across this information. Within 3 days, my almost 2 year old female German shepherd looked like her snout exploded. Was able to discuss course of tx with vet and hope the strong steroid and antibiotics help.

Thank you so much for this! I have an intact male nine-year-old German Shepherd staying with me who all of a sudden had wounds all over his face and I could not figure out why and finally I picked the right Google search and came up with this page. I’m sure he stuck his snout where he shouldn’t have on my 2 acres.

Thank you for posting this! Our dog loves to sniff around and honestly I’m shocked this hasn’t happened before. Her nose looks almost identical to your dog’s but I couldn’t find anything else that looked remotely like what her’s did. We have a vet appointment tomorrow but of course I’ve been freaking out in the mean time! This helped me feel better and we’ve just been putting her in kids hoodies so her paws can’t tear it up further along with some Antifungal & antiseptic spray to keep it clean.

Hi folks, I want to thank you for this posting with your excellent photos.

This last summer (2022) my 7 y.o. male black lab suddenly presented with a top-of-the-nose sore which within a day became a ugly lesion. We paid extra to "jump the line" and slip him into the vet that very day. The vet called saying he wants to do a expensive tissue biopsy to confirm that our boy has skin cancer. It SEEMED like a granuloma but there were some odd things about it.

Since we don't have the money for cancer treatment, much less for a $800 full anesthesia biopsy, we opted to bring him home with palliative treatment for the lesion and prepare ourselves for the worst.

Before we picked him up, I got online and found your article and was able to arm myself with the vocabulary and info needed to call the vet back and tell him to look up eosinophilic furunculosis: our dog had been under the deck just days earlier and came out wearing spider webs all over his head.

Our vet did his research and figured no one of had anything to lose treating this as furunculosis: and thank goodness because that is exactly what our dog had! His lesion shrank just as pictured and just as fast.

Without your posting we may have given our dog an invasive, disfiguring nose biopsy and spent hundreds of dollars we didn't have. Thank you for so generously sharing your knowledge and time with the internet; you made a huge difference in our world.

Kind regards,

Diane
