Hi Ash. It sounds like you’ve created a warm space for a dog that isn’t especially intolerant to cold, so unless the temperature gets very low where you are things sound pretty good. In fact, some of the problems we have with people keeping dogs outside is when they have had dogs like yours and then they transition to a single-coated more cold sensitive breed but don’t change their management.

I have a Kelpie boy, he's been an outside dog since we got him as a pup. He is a double coat Kelpie and he has an insulated, off ground kennel to sleep in, on our patio that's under cover and my husband put actual insulation on top of the insulation the kennel already has and carpeted over that, with his thick bed on the ground to sleep on and a little blanket for him to snuggle with. We have recently moved to a house higher in the hills, but in a valley and the temperature in winter is quite cold. Should I also get him to wear a warm coat on top of all this.

What’s the point in having a pet if it’s at k outside day and night? This place is so backwards sometimes I just don't understand how people’s brains work here... get a dog, ignore it, leave it outside, annoy the neighbours... why? Get a bird table or a fish pond if you’re too lazy to care for a dog. Morons.

Hi Ingrid. You’ll notice I put kelpies both in the single and double coated categories. They can be quite independent if raised correctly, and can definitely learn to sleep outside happily in time. I would start gradually from about 16 weeks of age depending on the weather but before that, have already taught him from 10 weeks that being separate from his owners in the house for short periods is no cause for alarm.

Thanks for the article. We are getting a kelpie puppy soon. We don’t live on a farm, just a regular suburban home. Is it a good idea to train the puppy to be both an inside and outside dog? We have a doggy door in the laundry which we are hoping he will use.

Hi JD. Thanks for reading before making the decision. I think in your case it will be fine- Labradors are quite cold-tolerant and you seem to have a good setup.

Thankyou for this article- would it be ok to have a labrador as an outside dog? We live on the adelaide plains. We are thinking of keeping our lab outside as we getting pretty tired of the endless cleaning up of dog hair, as well as for hygiene reasons. He will have a decent sized secure back yard with dry / shaded areas under a pergola and also a carport, a kennel under the carport and a rug, access to water. We will keep him exercised etc. Are the adelaide winters too cold for a lab to be outside?
