I use chicken wrapped rawhide for my Foxy/Maltese 10yr old and never had a problem with his teeth. He Always had problems with bones not digesting properly so I stopped giving them to him.

In reply to Susan Forby. Hi Susan. There really isn’t any alternative, so my only thought is to seek specialist advice on anaesthetics that won’t increase the risk of seizures. Personally, I’m only aware of this with certain drugs and I believe it should be possible to find a solution.

My dog has epilepsy which started after he was anaesthetised at age 7 years. He was put onto seizure medication which seemed to keep the seizures at bay. A subsequent anaesthetic resulted in more seizures and now he gets them every 4 to 8 weeks. As they last over a 24 hour period I am reluctant to get his teeth cleaned under anaesthetic but they need doing. Any suggestions?

Brisket bones, being less hard, seem to be non-injurious to dogs’ teeth, whereas large limb bones can cause chipping and cracking of the teeth.
