Hello. This is really helpful. My dog sneezes a few times and then seems to be reverse sneezing. Would this be kennel cough or allergies? I've noticed a little bit of a runny nose (one nostril only) but no coughing or lethargy.....
Thank you

Thank You So Much!! I appreciate you taking the time and having the consideration to share your story. I've found a number of off label uses for a variety of things.
Sharing these is a blessing to all!
Thank You Again

Hi Pierre. Thanks for that – it’s certainly news to me! I can hazard an explanation why: tears normally run down the nasolacrimal duct to the inside of the nose; that’s what keeps a dog’s nose moist. In your dog’s case, the dryness would have been enough to stimulate reverse sneezing. It won’t be a treatment for all, but it’s worth looking at the eye in cases like yours.

My dog used to have reverse sneezing for years.
But it got so bad later in his life, that I brought him to the vet to help him. He was so tired all the time because he could not get restful sleep without an attack every half hour.
She couldn't figure out what his problem was, but did notice he had dry eye.
He was prescribed Optimmune. I gave him a daily very small goop in each eye every day. After a couple days, I realized I hadn't seen him get the reverse sneeze anymore. I stopped the Optimmune treatment and sure enough, after 24 hrs he was back to sneezing again.
The Optimmune is for dry eye, but the dry eye condition also had side effect of reverse sneeze.
I still can't believe how simple and effective Optimmune is to relieve him of that condition.
I even contacted the manufacturer to tell them of this "off label" use the ointment has. (They were surprised to hear from someone praising a Pharmaceutical...). I also told my vet to recommend this ointment to other 'patients' that has the condition.
My dog is gone now and miss him so much. But I have to say his last 2 years were so much better because I finally got rid of the reverse sneezing he was suffering through and I tell his story as often as possible to help other dogs with this condition.
It really was a game changer for my pet, and my wife and I for the stress relief!
Please give Optimmune a try. It's harmless and I swear it does the trick.

Hi Amelia. If it was the grass that caused it, sometimes a long blade can get lodged inside the nasal passages. If that’s the case, you’ll probably need a vet to get it out.

It's been 9 hours since my 6 year old poodle ate a piece of grass and immediately started choking white foam was coming out of his mouth and he couldn't stop gagging. He sounded like he was asperating the grass. It has calmed down and it seems like something is stuck in his throat and nasal passage. Help. What should I do. Will it pass by it's self?

Hi Danni. Reverse sneezing is usually more common when dogs are excited or active, so it happening only during sleep is unusual. Therefore, although you are probably correct, I would get a checkup to look for other possibilities.

Thank you for the information in this article. My dog has started what I believe is reverse sneezing after doing some Googling (trying not to go too far down the rabbit hole and worry unnecessarily though). It only happens when in a really deep sleep early hours of the morning (1st day was 1:30am, 2nd day 4:30am) never at other times. Does it seem likely that it is just reverse sneezing? He is not showing any other signs of illness or distress!

Hi Allie. If Roxy has worsened in her old age then it’s very unlikely to be reverse sneezing. Hoarse breathing sounds like something a lot worse so please get a check up with your vet.
