We have and 8 month old rescue kitten. She is aggressive and domineering and determined it seems to control us. She bites and scratches us in bed until we get up, cries incesently until we let her out and generally makes us miserable until she gets what she wants. My husband and I go through life with huge bite and scratch marks on our arms, ankles toes and feet. Nothing has worked; redirection, calming treats, spaying etc. I feel sorry for her because we are close to giving up and we really love her and have a lot invested in her. She is sweet in some ways. Wants to be with people, wants to be touched but then ears back and attacks and then keeps on and We can't get her off us sometimes. It is scary. What can we do. I think she needs medication. Ive had many cats but none anything like this one. Thank you.

Hi Marlene. This sounds like excessive predatory or play behaviour and will be very difficult to stop. I would suggest that she uses a cattery in the future if you’re getting injured.

Hi Janice. It’s difficult to answer why this might have happened, especially without knowing his normal personality. Assuming that he doesn’t do this, I would be looking for a source of redirected aggression or possibly just that he was fearful when he was being chased as much aggression in animals is fear-related. If that’s the case, all you can do is coax him down, rather than trying to catch him.

Hi Aasha. Thanks for reading the article. I probably can’t provide much more advice beyond the article, which lays out all that I know in the best way I can. Having said this I’m happy to provide specific advice on any of the subjects raised or if you feel I have missed something. Good luck.

Hi Andrew,

I have a 7 month old British Shorthair kitten (Winston, he is a patient of yours).

We have noticed that when we pet him, he occasionally bites us, and by bite, he latches on very hard. At times, he has even chased me.

Can you advise on what might be causing this behaviour? Even when he bites, he is purring.

I look forward to your response.

Kind regards

Hi Deb. It sounds like misdirected sexual behaviour. My own neutered male cat does something similar at times and like you we recognise the warnings and stop him. Even if I’m wrong, it’s some form of highly ritualistic behaviour that probably has no easy solution except to interrupt it when it occurs.

Hi Andrew,

I have a male Birman cat who has the most beautiful nature. Smoochy, playful and very sociable. Loves people and greets everyone with a leg rub. I could go on and on….but the one thing he does which is odd is he sit on me and kneed for what seems like forever and he will then start turning his body and position himself where he can see my arm/hand and then he will try to position himself on my arm and bite the skin on my hand. He makes a loud meow and is determined to hold onto my arm whilst biting my hand and not wanting to let go. I know when he’s going to do this so I stop him straight away from needing me as it’s quite frightening to say the least.
What causes this kind of behaviour?
