Hi Shelley-Ann. It’s very common for the relationship between two cats to be affected by one going to the vet for an anaesthetic. It’s probably a combination of the unusual scary smells and their strange behaviour afterwards. Once trust is lost (like with people) it takes a long time for it to be regained, so all you can do is keep trying as you are.

I have 2 adult male cats from the same litter. They’re almost 10 years old and have always been very close. Sleeping next to each other and grooming each other. One had dental surgery and the other has been extremely agressive ever since. We’ve had them separated for a while now but we switch them every day so they swap spaces so the scents should be good and mixed. I’ve tried having them in the room together for just a few minutes with the aggressor on a leash. There’s been a little hissing and lunging but the leash has kept him controlled. I wanted to try a cone next and supervise some same room time but I wasn’t sure if that was a good idea. Thanks for this article. This was very helpful!
