My poor darling dog has had no success on cytopoint or Apoquel, often requiring antibiotics and steroids every few months. We have bitten the bullet and are trying immunotherapy. We are also lucky in that my parents live on a block with no grass or trees that she is allergic to so they’ve babysat her since her allergies began. It’s come to the time when they’re away travelling and she must stay with me (or be re-homed which is obviously not an option at this time). To manage her flare ups, we are using 20mg prednisone per day (34kg dog) plus Zyrtec as needed, and medicated shampoos and oatmeal conditioners twice weekly. Steroids have been a life saver. They reduce the inflammation and the angry-ness. We have tried every second day, but it just doesn’t have the desired effect, and the vet has said an extra 20mg every 3-4 days (if she is looking very severely red and inflamed) is ok given her condition and weight. Always so worrying reading about the side effects of steroids when my dog has used them frequently, but this post was reassuring.

Hi Janet. It’s a reasonable treatment, especially combined with effective skincare. More information about it and side-effects are found in the article above.

My Chihuahua/Yorkie mix has Black Skin Disease and Atopic Dermatitus. He itches constantly. We have been getting shots from the vet to control his condition, but after retiring and being on a fixed income, we are unable to afford the shots anymore. I was wondering if a low dose of Prednisone would work for him? What are the side effects to watch for?

Hi Maria. I can’t give specific dosing advice without examining the patient as it will depend on many other factors, plus what else you are doing at the same time (as mentioned in the article).
