We adopted a six and 1/2 year old dog about a year and a half ago. She was chipped when we got her. This morning we found a scabby thing on her back. Upon closer inspection, it was her chip! It had come through the skin. Another day or so it would have been gone and we would have never known. She will be getting re-chipped. Yes, I took pictures.

Sounds like microchipping isn't effective often because vets don't have a scan policy. At minimum vets needs to check every new patient, or the system is pointless.

In reply to <a href="https://www.walkervillevet.com.au/blog/the-problem-with-microchips/#comment-170856">Chris</a>.

Hi Chris. We indeed scan any stray but if a new client claims to own a pet we don't generally check the microchip details unless we're suspicious.A microchip itself just stores a number, but the database registry entry can be flagged as lost or stolen.

Do you scan all pets that come to the clinic as “strays”. If a pet is stolen and the chip is flagged as such does it show up as stolen or missing or is there another step.

I'm strongly in favour of microchips but I think that it should be compulsory for cats and dog to be scanned every time they go to the vets. That would make sure records are up to date and help prevent thefts.

I tell you what went wrong, let’s remember why we use microchips in the first place. Microchips are without a doubt the best way to identify lost animals.
