My 15 year old cat developed hyperthyroidism two years ago. One thing that really helped him was adding a B12 injection once a week. It cleared up his diarrhea. I also added freeze dry raw cat food, high in protein low in carbs. That can be expensive so I mix it with a little wet cat food. Before we got his condition under control he was going through 30 cans of Fancy Feast a week. He still licks a lot and his fur is almost gone. His weight has stabilized from 11.4 to 13.

Thank you very much Andrew. I appreciate your advice, and will continue with testing and exploring other conditions with my vet. My boy has another checkup very soon and I hope his weight will stabilize.

Hi Jennifer. Be very careful that your cat does not have a second problem. Hyperthyroidism is extremely common and often found incidentally in cats while searching for another problem. A cat will definitely start gaining or at least not lose any more weight once starting treatment.

My 17 year old cat was diagnosed hyperthyroid about 4 weeks ago and is on methimazole tablets 1x a day. At his 3 week checkup (last week) he had lost more weight and is losing hair but his blood pressure was good and thyroid was now in high normal range. I think we caught it early because he gets checkups every 4 months. He has no other health issues, kidneys and liver are good. Should he begin to look and feel better like Bingo did? I am worried about him but he seems a bit better.
