Hi Laura – that’s a good question. A Cavalier-sized dog treated with 4 drugs for advanced heart disease costs most clients around $3-400 a month. Earlier on in the disease process it would be around $200.

Hi, I was wondering what the cost of medication for dogs with heart murmurs is. I'm looking at adopting a Cavalier from a shelter and I know as a breed they are very likely to have or develop heart problems, so just curious as to how affordable the treatments are. Thank you :)

Hi Pauline. You can just call any vet you choose and visit them the same way you visit your first vet. You probably don’t even need to get the second vet to request a history if it’s only about a heart murmur and no treatment has been tried. Alternatively, you could ask for a referral to a veterinary cardiologist if one is available in your area. We have one in Adelaide that visits once a month from Melbourne.

Hi Marilyn. I think the fact that you are noticing changes that could relate to a heart problem make it worth getting a second opinion. It’s almost certain that your vet is right but it doesn’t cost much in time or money to get a second look. Another alternative is to ask for a chest x-ray as explained in our page on heart problems.

We adopted our dog from a rescue home in Adelaide at about 6-8 years old (her age) We have had her for just over a year.
We were told she had a grade 2 heart murmur at the time, but our vet doesn't seem concerned about it. However, even when it's not hot, sometimes she pants so hard and fast, I am concerned. Now she has a sore hind leg, obviously not her heart. Not sure when we need to seek vet care. We can't afford huge bills but we would not want her to be suffering.
